Fishing
has always been popular on Dave's side of the family. In
this photo, taken sometime in the early-to-mid 1970s, Dave's
grandparents, former UAW Local President Richard Saeger and
Grandma Ella, show off a recent catch. Judging from the size
of the fishing net leaning up against the car, it's easy to
see Grandpa caught fish this size on a regular basis.
Michigan's freshwater lakes have always been plentiful with
fish of this size and larger for many thousands of years.
That fishermen (and fisherwomen) can still catch fish this
size and larger is a tribute to the men and women of
Michigan's DNR who manage Michigan's lakes and streams.
Of
course, Grandpa Saeger couldn't just let the DNR manage all
of his fishing. He had the pond shown to the right dug on
his property in the thumb area ouside of Millington, then
stocked it with trout and perch. He kept the swimming area
free of nests but the fish still swam up to the legs of
unsuspecting swimmers and attempted to take chunks out of
their legs. They never succeeded at this as the attempted
bites ended up feeling like nothing more than small fish
kisses.
