To us, an "eatery of interest" is a place that serves something specific to Michigan, whether it's a corn-roasted whitefish, something from Koegel's, or one of Michigan's more unique burgers or coneys. Enjoy!

Ann Arbor

Arcadia

Birch Run

  • The Old Dixie Inn
  • Tony's - If this restaurant won't bust your belt loops, nothing will. Why? Because the portion you get is whatever they received from the supplier! The BLT sandwich actually has a pound of bacon on it. And the sundaes are huge!

Blissfield

Boyne City

Cadillac

Detroit

  • American Coney Island - Since 1917, home of the Detroit-style coney, topped with their secret-recipe chili, mustard and sweet chopped onion.

Dundee

Erie

  • Erie Restaurant and Bar - Serving Michigan buffalo burgers.
  • Frog Leg Inn - Just a few miles from us, this Toledo Blade-reviewed five-star restaurant that serves French cuisine with a midwestern flavor is where we have dinner on special occasions. The Lake Erie Walleye melts in the mouth, and if Chef Tad is making Salmon In A Brown Bag, be sure to order it. Catherine runs a fun dining room that you'll want to stay in for hours.

Flint

Frankenmuth

  • Bavarian Inn
  • Black Forest Brew Haus & Grill - Owner Tim Sullivan and his crew offer dishes such as their Frankenmuth Sausage Sampler, White Cheddar Cheese & Ale Soup, and deep-fried Michigan Lake Perch. There's also an on-site brewery with many handcrafted and seasonal beers from English Pale Ales to German Heffeweizens.

  • Zehnder's - America's largest family-owned restaurant can seat 1,500+ guests in ten dining rooms. Executive Chef John Zehnder and his kitchen staff prepare food that is quite simply top-of-the-line. Chef Zehnder sent Dave an email after Thanksgiving weekend 2000 and wrote "Thanksgiving weekend is coming to a close - finally!!!! We averaged 5,000 guests per day for the past four days, roasted 375 turkeys, 190 ducks, 3,600 chickens plus 3,200 pounds of squash and 1,500 pounds of sweet potatoes!" Dave's sister has an autographed copy of Chef Zehnder's Frankenmuth's Favorites containing 100 recipes for chicken breasts. The autograph reads "To each recipe add a cup of love. John Zehnder"

Kawkawlin

  • Turkey Roost - You can't miss this building on M-13. It's just as pink as it's been the past 50+ years, just so you can find it. Everything's made from scratch, including the full turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberries and biscuits. Order this plate and you'll likely see it within five minutes. Honestly, they used to keep turkeys in a pen out by the road. There's a picture on the wall of this.

Northville

Okemos

  • Restaurant Villegas - Home to Chef Eric Villegas, host of "Fork In The Road", a PBS food program that "celebrates Michigan's diverse food heritage". There are great Michigan dishes such as a spit-roasted Nature's Premier organic chicken of Frankenmuth, and specials like a wood-roasted whitefish chowder, and a 14-hour hickory-smoked pork shoulder.

Petoskey

Sault Ste. Marie

Tecumseh

  • Evan's Street Station - Formerly the town's firehouse, this restaurant was voted Best Restaurant To Open In Michigan in 2001 in the AAA magazine Reader's Poll. It features an exhibition kitchen where guests can watch the chefs at work, and dishes such as their Michigan Potato Chowder, Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras, and Chestnut Seared Whitefish.
