The Microsoft HTML Help Applet:
A Working Description Of Its Usage

What Can It Do?

The main purpose of the Microsoft HTML Help Java applet is to allow for cross-platform online help systems to be developed that are also browser independent. This is made possible through the applet's usage in the creation of Contents and Index pages, such as those you see in the left pane. As you work through the material we developed here, you'll see what the possibilities are.

We're not going to pull any punches though. Throughout this material, you'll also be able to see what some of the applet's deficiencies are. For example, you may have already noticed there are no Search or Favorites tabs in the left pane. These are things the applet simply cannot do. These capabilities may be added later, but for now, there's no method for accomplishing these functions with this applet.

How This Material Works

We've laid out the Contents tab in the left pane so you can get to whatever material you need on the subject of the applet in a logical manner. Each section starts with an overview, then breaks the material down into individual topics to provide the in-depth explanations you'll need to make the applet work correctly.

The Index tab is set up so that later on, if you're looking for something in particular for a given project, you'll be able to find it more easily through the use of keywords. This way, you can research just what you need and not have to wade through other items first.

We hope to be able to cover everything here. If there's something missing, please let us know in news:microsoft.public.helpauthoring.

Enjoy!
